All work and no play makes jack a dull boy

At the crack of dawn, a squad can be seen on the avenues of Abbotabad, Pakistan. Numbering up to three hundred it troops across, and plays havoc in the lanes. Its members are well organized, and punctual in their duty.

Uniform doesn’t carry importance to them, they always wear the same shabby clothes and worn-out shoes for several days, and perhaps several months. They get their basic training from their houses and weapons as well. Their most deadly weapon is a sack, which they always carry on their shoulders.

This is not the story of a terrorist gang, but of an army of street children. These poor-souls have to labour from dawn to dusk, in harsh weather conditions. To bring in few bucks, they do almost all sorts of labour including scavenging for scraps in rubbish, collecting paper and metal from garbage dumps, and begging etc.

The fruit of their whole day’s labor is less than 3 dollars. Their job is not an easy one, they have to face my challenges during their self-imposed working hours. Many of them fall victim to rape, abduction, sexual servitude, sodomy, HIV, STDs, and beatings.

“I always come here, under the protection of my younger brothers, otherwise people chase me, and try to do bad things with me”, said a girl.

“My sister was abducted three years back while returning home in the evening, and is still missing”, a sad-looking boy bared his heart.

These young ones haven’t chosen this profession by choice; numerous factors enforced them into it. Extreme poverty, lack of education, sudden death in the family, domestic violence, meagre sources of income, are notable in this regard.

A young boy who resides in a nearby slum remarked,
“Iam the only bread-winner for my family, my father has died and there is no one to support us financially.”

Whatever be the reasons, this small but oppressed class of the society, needs our support and consideration.
Continuous apathy on our side will not only add to the miseries of these broods, but also bring about dire effects on the overall situation of the country.

These un-armed, innocent kids will turn into merciless assassins, voracious terrorists, sentimental suicide bombers, and voluptuous prostitutes, if not provided with the basic necessities of life.
The government and the NGOs should pay heed to the deplorable condition of the street children, before it’s too late.

We are sanguine that the local NGOs will give a helping hand to these needy children, and put an end to their miseries.

Only God can help these children. Pakistani government has no time for them. They are busy in eliminating the Taliban.

Yes i agree with you Yash. The government should give first priority to the plight of these kids, otherwise they will fall victim to the extremists. An old proverb well fits to the situation,”Nib the in the bud”.

Both the countries should pay heed to this problem, instead of spending half of their budgets on defence.
We hope that one day these two neighbours will realize that ”Poverty Bomb” is far more dangerous than ”Atomic Bomb”.

Don’t disturb them. They are the raw material for Taliban and Al Qaeda.

In my humble view it is the problem of both countries of South Asia.
We should take joint steps for the elimination of poverty and the problem of street children.

Children are the future of any nation,Let’s not ignore the plight of these lesser souls.Providing them a quality life should be high on the priority list of all the governments.

A very well written article/report.

The dilemma with Pakistan’s plight of poverty is corrupt leadership and distinct social classes who don’t care for one another.

Thanks Dear Ikram for your sincere appreciation as well as valuable comment.
Pakistan has been unlucky in this matter. After M.A Jinnah(QuadeAzam),there is a huge vaccum, there is still a beam of hope.
Abdul Sattar Edhi(Social Worker) is a good example in this case.

Nice reading this post. It is rightly mentioned that children if brought up properly will turn into responsible citizens. We cannot wait for the government to do something for them, coz, politicians are usually a busy lot trying to outsmart one another, or indulging in some or other kind of vote bank politics. One way out for these children will be if some affluent households take it upon themselves to educate them and help them to make a life for themselves.

Thanks alot for liking the article and putting your valuable comment on it.
Again i would say that Social Workers like Abdul Sattar Edhi are working on similar projects but still they need a helping hand from the government.
Very interesting to tell that these children daily come for garbage near the UNO and other NGOs’offices but no one pays attention to them.

The extremism that is being injected in the children of Islamic nations will prove fatal to the whole mankind if not corrected immediately.

Yes you are right Steve but it’s because of prejudiced curriculum.
Work should be done to curb this the problem of extremism by changing the cirriculm.

Faheem,

I believe the children mentioned in your article need ”food”, ”clothes” and ”Shelter” first before turning to understand what curriculum is. I believe the party in power in Pakistan holds the same mandate and carries the same mantra in every election, right?

I was actually throwing some light on the problem of extremism, as mentioned above by Steeve.
I agree with you some parties do cash the slogan, during election, to garner public support and votes.
Our poor public gets into the trap of cunning politicians.
